Pecan’s Breakfast Club returns with fellowship, butterflies | Columnists

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 28 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother, and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 15 years cumulatively. She spends her time both gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

Before COVID-19, Breakfast Club in Pecan Plantation was a time for Wednesday morning attendees to gather for coffee and conversation.

Now with the coronavirus pandemic easing its grip on our community, Breakfast Club has once again become a part of Pecaners’ lives meeting on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 9 am at the clubhouse. Breakfast is prepared by the clubhouse staff, and speakers from our community make for a pleasant gathering.

Breakfast Club recently heard an interesting program from master gardener Deborah Rollins, with three additional master gardeners (Helena Ambrose, Debra Cook, and Renee Rogers) in attendance, about the monarch butterfly. The presentation generated comments and questions about monarchs and was filled with timely information.

Pecan’s Breakfast Club will meet again on Wednesday, June 22 at 9 am in the clubhouse ballroom. Reservations are due by noon on Tuesday, June 21: 817-573-2641. Dr. David Blocker from the Hood County Public Health Authority will speak on lessons learned during COVID-19.

Today, Saturday, June 18 is a busy art day in Pecan with two paint party events happening.

The first comes from 11 am to 1 pm for artists ages 5 to 15 where participants will be painting surfboards on wood. Pecan resident and artist Heidi Easley will be facilitating the event where “fun, prizes, music, and pizza” are on the menu.

Next comes a “Let’s Paint America” party event also led by Heidi Easley where participants will create a piece of Americana art. The evening runs from 5 to 7 pm, and both paint parties require advance registration: 817-573-7952.

“Geometric Mixed Media Art” led by Pecan resident and artist Deanna Thibault begins Monday, June 20 at 9 am for artists ages seven and older, the first session of Junior Golf Camp begins Wednesday, June 22 at 9 am, and Pickleball Camp for Kids starts on Monday, June 27 at 1 pm Contact the PAC front desk and golf pro shops to sign little ones up for these events.

The 2022 Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Service Auxiliary Golf Tournament is on the calendar for Saturday, June 25, and golfers are registering to play.

Committee Chair Jennifer Lancaster is also busy signing up sponsors, and several levels of patronage exist. Folks seeking to join the sponsor list may send email to or reach Jennifer at 817-219-5108.

On tournament day, golfers will vie for three valuable hole-in-one prizes, two of which contain generous amounts of cash and the third consists of a new car.

The tournament format is a four-person mixed scramble, and the entry fee is $65 per person. Registration forms are available at the pro shop, which will establish teams by handicap, and winners will receive pro shop credit. Registration begins at noon on game day, and a shotgun start will happen at 1:30 pm Mulligans will be available for purchase.

In addition, the raffle prize list is generous and growing, and tickets are available for purchase at Pecan Financial Services in The Village and from auxiliary members. Holders of raffle tickets do not need to be present on tournament day to claim prizes.

The auxiliary raises funds year-round for our emergency service personnel, and every penny raised supports our volunteers.

“Summer Time Bingo” is on the calendar for Sunday, June 26 in the clubhouse ballroom from 7 to 9 pm Daubers and cards will be provided, and snacks, tea, and water will be served to participants. Prizes will be awarded to winners. The evening is hosted by Pecan’s Entertainment Committee. Seating is limited, and reservations are requested: 817-573-2641.

Summertime also has Pecan’s golf course busy with several upcoming events planned.

Tuesday, June 22 and Tuesday, July 1 are designated “Beat the Heat” play days with an 8:30 am shotgun start. Sign up is on Foretees. Saturday, June 25 is a regular play day also with an 8:30 shotgun start. Questions? Direct them to the golf pro shop staff: 817-573-2645.

Pecan’s Men’s Golf Association withstood the stifling heat, and 80 players persevered in the recent annual MGA tournament. Many thanks go to golf pro Duff Cunningham, as well as the entire pro shop staff, for facilitating this popular venture.

Our deepest sympathy goes to the family and friends of Jennifer Berberich, especially her parents and grandparents, upon her passing on May 29. | 817-579-9360
