The best T-fal frying pan – Chicago Tribune

When T-fal was founded in France in the 1950s, this revolutionary combination of nonstick Teflon and aluminum was an innovation that changed how home cooks thought about kitchen equipment. Today, T-fal frying pans are among the most versatile and respected pans for both skilled home cooks and professionals who want a reliable pan at home.

The T-fal Endura Granite Ceramic Fry Pan Set offers solid performance in a two-pan set that covers all of your culinary needs.

A set of T-fal cookware comes with at least one frying pan, but when buying individually, you’ll want to consider the size of the pan you need. Basic T-fal pans come in 8 inches, 10 inches and 12 inches. Some pans are available in 10.5 inches, 12.5 inches and 16 inches, too.

T-fal frying pans come in four basic materials.

  • stainless steel is the choice of professional cooks, but these pans can be challenging to learn to use properly. If a pan is not heated well or seasoned, food has a tendency to stick. However, if you’re looking to improve your culinary skill, stainless steel is an upgrade from other pans.
  • Hard anodized titanium nonstick is durable and scratch-resistant. These pans are best used on medium or low heat. Although they are heat resistant to 400 degrees, they will not hold up to broiling. If you prefer nonstick pans, these are a high-quality step up from more basic versions.
  • Ceramic pans have a heavy-gauge aluminum core. They are lightweight and have excellent heat transfer and are oven-safe to 570 degrees. They need to be properly heated to have nonstick properties. This requires some practice. These are not usable on induction burners.
  • Non-stick signature is T-fal’s original line and a great entry point into their brand. Frying pans are oven-safe to 350 degrees, and they feature Thermo Spot technology. These pans are dishwasher-safe. They are not as durable as other options, but they are available at lower prices.

Some T-fal frying pans have Thermo-Spot indicators in the bottom of the pan. When the spot turns red the pan is properly preheated. This is especially valuable for beginning cooks who routinely add food to a cold pan. It eliminates the temperature guesswork.

Most T-fal pans feature sturdy riveted handles that are secure and comfortable to use. When a pan is full of boiling liquid, this is a feature you cannot live without.

While most frying pans are open, a lid can be very useful when frying food or adding foods that spatter to a hot pan. This makes for easier cleanup, too, as the mess stays inside the pan. Some lids have tempered glass for easier viewing.

Stainless T-fal pans may also have a Techno Release pattern built into the design of the pan. This dimpled surface on the bottom of the pan helps to release food more easily as it cooks.

All T-fal pans are free from harmful chemicals, including:

  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
  • Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)
  • Cadmium
  • lead

Many of T-fal’s cookware lines are covered by a limited warranty that guarantees the craftsmanship of the pan. Check with the pan you select for any specific coverage or limitations.

The cost varies depending on the material you select and the size of the pan. Expect to spend $35-$60.

HAS. Yes, T-fal pans clean up easily in the dishwasher. If you prefer to wash by hand, allow the pan to cool completely before adding warm water and mild detergent. Scrub gently with a plastic scrubber and dry completely before storing the pan.

HAS. Most cooks find these frying pans easy to use and care for, but it’s important to season your nonstick pans before their first use.

  • wash the pan in warm, soapy water and completely dry.
  • heat the pan on low for 30 seconds.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of cooking oiland spread evenly across the interior of the pan.
  • Remove any excess with a paper towel, allow your pan to cool completely, and it’s ready to go.

To protect the longevity of your pans:

  • Cook over low or medium heat only.
  • Do not allow your frying pan to boil dry or sit empty on a heated stove.
  • Use the appropriate size electric, gas or induction burner for the pan.
  • let the pans cool completely before washing.
  • Don’t store pans inside each other.

T-fal Endura Granite Ceramic Fry Pan Set: available at Amazon

Our take: These pans are durable, beautiful and versatile.

What we like: This set has two sides, one 8-inch and one 10.5-inch. They are safe on a cooking surface to 570 degrees and oven-safe to 500 degrees. The cooking surface is PTFE-free and PFOA-free. Although they are not technically nonstick, a properly heated ceramic pan releases food much more easily.

What we dislike: They do not come with lids and cannot be used on induction burners.

T-fal Fry Pan With Lid: available at Amazon

Our take: This is a versatile pan that includes a tempered glass lid.

What we like: If you only have space for one frying pan, this is a good choice. It’s T-fal signature nonstick, featuring a Thermo Spot and comfortable silicone handle. This works on an induction cooktop and also comes in a 12-inch version. A hard anodized aluminum version is also available.

What we dislike: Some users noted that the Thermo Spot is not as accurate as advertised. This was true for all types of pans with this feature.

T-fal Performa Stainless Steel Fry Pan: available at Amazon

Our take: Additional features on this stainless steel frying pan help even novice cooks to get good results.

What we like: It’s made of durable 18/10 stainless steel and is oven- and dishwasher-safe. The stainless steel handle is securely riveted, and this pan works on all cooktops — including induction. It has a Techno Release pattern on the bottom to more easily release food, and it’s covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

What we dislike: Cleaning the bottom of the pan with the indented pattern is tricky.
